An lá ceaptha.
1.—Féadfaidh an Rialtas, le hordú, lá a cheapadh chun bheith ina lá ceaptha chun críocha an Achta seo.
An Ghaeltacht.
2.—(1) Chun críocha an Achta seo is í an Ghaeltacht na límistéirí a mbeidh cinnte de thuras na huaire le hordú faoin alt seo gur límistéirí Gaeltachta iad.
(2) Féadfaidh an Rialtas ó am go ham le hordú a chinneadh gur límistéirí Gaeltachta límistéirí sonraithe, is límistéirí ar Gaeilgeoirí mórchuid de na daoine iontu agus límistéirí ina n-aice sin ar dóigh leis an Rialtas gur cheart iad d'áireamh sa Ghaeltacht d'fhonn an Ghaeilge a chaomhaint agus a leathnú mar ghnáth-urlabhra.
(3) Féadfaidh an Rialtas, le hordú, aon ordú faoin alt seo a chúlghairm nó a leasú.
(4) Gach ordú a déanfar faoin alt seo leagfar é faoi bhráid gach Tí den Oireachtas a luaithe is féidir tar éis a dhéanta agus má dhéanann ceachtar Teach acu sin, laistigh den lá agus fiche a shuífeas an Teach sin tar éis an t-ordú a leagadh faoina bhráid, rún a rith ag neamhniú an orduithe, beidh an t-ordú ar neamhní dá réir sin ach sin gan dochar do bhailíocht aon ní a rinneadh roimhe sin faoin ordú.
Roinn na Gaeltachta.
3.—(1) Ar an lá ceaptha beidh Roinn Stáit arna bunú ar a dtabharfar mar theideal agus dá ngairmfear Roinn na Gaeltachta.
(2) Is é is feidhm do Roinn na Gaeltachta leas cultúrtha, sóisialach agus geilleagrach na Gaeltachta a chur chun cinn; cabhrú le caomhaint agus leathnú na Gaeilge mar ghnáth-urlabhra; agus, a mhéid is gá nó is cuí, dul i gcomhairle agus comhairle a ghlacadh le Ranna eile Stáit i dtaobh seirbhísí a riaras na Ranna sin agus a bhaineas le leas cultúrtha, sóisialach nó geilleagrach na Gaeltachta nó a bhaineas leis an gcuspóir náisiúnta an Ghaeilge d'athbheochaint.
(3) Aire na Gaeltachta a tabharfar mar theideal ar an gcomhalta den Rialtas a bheas i mbun Roinn na Gaeltachta agus a gairmfear de.
(4) Bainfidh na hAchta Airí agus Rúnaithe, 1924 go 1946, agus an tAcht um Fhianaise Scríbhinne, 1925 (Uimh. 24 de 1925), le Roinn na Gaeltachta agus leis an gcomhalta den Rialtas a bheas i mbun na Roinne sin amhail is dá mbeadh an Roinn sin arna bunú le halt 1 den Acht Airí agus Rúnaithe, 1924 (Uimh. 16 de 1924).
(5) Chun críocha fo-ailt (1) d'alt 6 den Acht Airí agus Rúnaithe (Leasú), 1939 (Uimh. 36 de 1939), measfar Roinn na Gaeltachta agus oifig Aire na Gaeltachta a bheith arna mbunú láithreach ar an Acht seo a rith, ach in aon ordú a déanfar, maidir leis an Roinn sin nó maidir leis an Aire sin, faoin bhfo-alt sin (1) roimh an lá ceaptha, ní déarfar an t-ordú sin a bheith le teacht i ngníomh ar dháta is luaithe ná an lá ceaptha.
Gearrtheideal, forléiriú agus lua.
4.—(1) Féadfar an tAcht Airí agus Rúnaithe (Leasú), 1956, a ghairm den Acht seo.
(2) Forléireofar an tAcht seo agus na hAchta Airí agus Rúnaithe, 1924 go 1946, mar aon ní amháin, agus féadfar na hAchta Airí agus Rúnaithe, 1924 go 1956, a ghairm den Acht seo agus de na hAchta sin le chéile.

MINISTERS AND SECRETARIES (AMENDMENT) ACT, 1956.
Appointed day.
1.—The Government may by order appoint a day to be the appointed day for the purposes of this Act.
The Gaeltacht.
2.—(1) For the purposes of this Act the Gaeltacht shall comprise the areas for the time being determined to be Gaeltacht areas by order under this section.
(2) The Government may from time to time by order determine to be Gaeltacht areas specified areas, being substantially Irish-speaking areas and areas contiguous thereto which, in the opinion of the Government, ought to be included in the Gaeltacht with a view to preserving and extending the use of Irish as a vernacular language.
(3) The Government may by order revoke or amend any order under this section.
(4) Every order under this section shall be laid before each House of the Oireachtas as soon as may be after it is made and if a resolution annulling the order is passed by either such House within the next subsequent twenty-one days on which that House has sat after the order is laid before it, the order shall be annulled accordingly but without prejudice to the validity of anything previously done under the order.
The Department of the Gaeltacht.
3.—(1) On the appointed day a Department of State to be styled and known as the Department of the Gaeltacht shall stand established.
(2) It shall be the function of the Department of the Gaeltacht to promote the cultural, social and economic welfare of the Gaeltacht; to encourage the preservation and extension of the use of Irish as a vernacular language; and, to such extent as may be necessary or appropriate, to consult and advise with other Departments of State in respect of services administered by such Departments which affect the cultural, social or economic welfare of the Gaeltacht or which concern the national aim of restoring the Irish language.
(3) The member of the Government who is in charge of the Department of the Gaeltacht shall be styled and known as the Minister for the Gaeltacht.
(4) The Ministers and Secretaries Acts, 1924 to 1946 and the Documentary Evidence Act, 1925 (No. 24 of 1925), shall apply to the Department of the Gaeltacht and the member of the Government who is in charge thereof as if that Department had been established by section 1 of the Ministers and Secretaries Act, 1924 (No. 16 of 1924).
(5) For the purposes of subsection (1) of section 6 of the Ministers and Secretaries (Amendment) Act, 1939 (No. 36 of 1939), the Department of the Gaeltacht and the office of Minister for the Gaeltacht shall be deemed to have been established immediately upon the passing of this Act, but any order which is made, in relation to that Department or that Minister, under the said subsection (1) before the appointed day shall not be expressed to come into operation on a date earlier than the appointed day.
Short title, construction and citation.
4.—(1) This Act may be cited as the Ministers and Secretaries (Amendment) Act, 1956.
(2) This Act shall be construed as one with the Ministers and Secretaries Acts, 1924 to 1946, and this Act and those Acts may be cited together as the Ministers and Secretaries Acts, 1924 to 1956.
